da pinup bet: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told the club’s official website that Sadio Mane’s decision to put pen to paper on a new contract is a testament to the club’s stature.
What did he say?
After Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino signed new long-term deals, all Liverpool fans wanted to see was Mane do the same.
The Senegal international has been part of the fold at Anfield since his 2016 move from Southampton, and he has become one of their key players.
Last season, in particular, the attacker scored 20 goals and registered eight assists in all competitions.
So far in the current campaign, Mane has netted eight goals and has set up one other.
After he signed on the dotted line, Klopp told the club’s official website:
“This is a big boost for everyone and another demonstration of how the players we have at this club are committed, not just to our present but our future also. I can’t think of a single club anywhere in Europe that wouldn’t want a player like Sadio available to them, so the fact he wants to remain with us says something about where we are currently.”
Is it enough?
Klopp is right in saying that having the commitment of Mane, as well as Salah and Firmino, shows that Liverpool are in a strong position as a club.
However, signing and keeping their best players is not enough to maintain such a stature.
The proof comes in winning trophies, and even though Klopp has developed an impressive team, he is yet to pick up a piece of silverware as Liverpool boss.

Since taking over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has guided the Reds to three cup finals, but has lost every one of them.
Progress is certainly being made at Anfield as they are genuine contenders in the Premier League title race, and they were one win away from securing the Champions League trophy in the 2017-18 campaign.
Liverpool also have world-class players within the squad, but if they want to continue bringing that calibre of player to the club they need to start winning trophies.
