da betway: The radio station talkSPORT has long been a haven for football fanatics who can be sure to find news and discussion of their beloved sport whatever the hour. When rival broadcasters feel compelled to cover rugby or athletics this station is content to discuss the weekend’s controversial moments for the umpteenth time. The media outlet pulled off a sizeable coup earlier this year by acquiring rights to broadcast live, uninterrupted commentary from the Premier League’s late Saturday kick-off and Sunday’s early game. Having broken up the BBC radio’s monopoly on live football, talkSPORT has recruited Sky Sports News’ Sam Matterface to be their chief commentator accompanied by expert summariser Stan Collymore. But are talkSPORT wasting their opportunity, leaving the listener longing for more of Five Live?
da betano casino: After making a brief appearance in Basic Instinct 2 where art threatened to imitate life, Collymore entered the world of football punditry. He gradually became a vocal and comfortable broadcaster on said radio station and recently found the confidence to weigh in with his views on the state of the BBC’s flagship football show. The analyst who was sacked as a radio pundit for the Beeb in 2004, said this about Match of the Day: “I’ve watched it for 33 years but, right now, in my opinion as a football fan, it’s c**p, and like dinosaur football, has to change.” On the issue of Alan Shearer’s apparent lack of knowledge concerning the game outside England he stated, “Does it T me off? Damn right it does. Could I do better? I already do.”
Is Collymore entitled to feel ebulliently sure of his own qualities as a pundit? Whether featuring on Channel Five’s Europa League coverage or the more familiar surroundings of radio, the former Villan seems well prepared, armoured with an arsenal of statistics to augment his provocative views. The pressing issue for talkSPORT is the change in style they have adopted to coincide with the new Premier League rights deal announced earlier this year. Their recent coverage of an evening kick-off between Sunderland and Arsenal exemplified their new, souped-up approach. Matterface does well to inform the listener where the ball is on the pitch, a vital nugget of information Five Live routinely ignores. Yet when Darren Bent scored an equaliser in the dying stages there was something distinctly Mediterranean about his pronunciation of his surname and the word goal. Elongated for longer than seemed comfortable, Collymore responded in the manner of an excited child, screeching, “This is why we love football.”
Many could be excused for switching over to find solace in the more dulcet tones of Mike Ingham and David Pleat. Throughout that match the ranting Collymore could not focus on the game as he was incredibly incensed at Samir Nasri’s diving. Arsenal were awarded a penalty after the Frenchman had his ankle tapped by the Egyptian Ahmed Elmohamady in the area. Tomas Rosicky blazed the spot kick over the bar but Collymore could not restrain himself, attacking the ethics of the modern professional. Despite Bent’s show stopping goal, diving became the key topic in his post-match discussion show, ‘Call Collymore.’ Before taking calls from irate Arsenal supporters he had a row with fellow presenter Adrian Durham which felt discernibly engineered. When callers suggested diving was now endemic, the former Liverpool striker scoffed that it was not the case in his day and challenged anyone to unearth footage of himself going to ground easily.
From their live commentary to their phone-in show, talkSPORT has clearly opted to amplify the drama. Their star pundit should note that it was the bloody mindedness of Alan Green which turned listeners away from 606. Whilst kindly informing the listener that all five Sky Sports channels are only available on Sky, their coverage feels similarly spiced up for what is essentially a game of football. Collymore’s rants and Matterface’s excitable disposition simply leave you nostalgic for the reassuring jingle of Five Live’s ‘Sports Report.’
