Chelsea confirmed they had come to an agreement with the Spanish club confirming this in a statement that read: “An agreement has been reached with Valencia for the transfer of Juan Mata.
“The move is now subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.”
Villas-Boas quickly identified a lack of pace and creativity in the midfield at Stamford Bridge after joining the club in June.
The move for 23-year-old Mata will come as a shock to many Blues fans after he was linked with Arsenal for most of the transfer window although boss Arsene Wenger never firmed up his interest.
Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with a move but Chelsea have beaten off both of their London rivals to land the player who was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup winning squad.
A former Real Madrid youth player, Mata scored eight goals last season to guide Valencia to third in La Liga and could yet be joined in West London by Luka Modric who remains on Villas-Boas’ radar.
