da bwin:
da betsul: Having been appointed Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson can look forward to preparing his new side in time for next season. The club’s early participation in next season’s Europa League means that Hodgson will not have as much time as he would’ve wanted to reshape the squad, but his priorities for the upcoming months are clear for all to see. Addressing the futures of Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano and captain Steven Gerrard will be matters of great urgency, although strengthening a squad that finished seventh last season will also be of importance. Early sources suggest that the former Fulham manager has been handed a modest £15m transfer kitty, with Hodgson permitted to supplement this figure with funds raised from player sales. Assuming that Hodgson can keep hold of the aforementioned trio, which areas will he be looking to strengthen this summer?
Liverpool’s overreliance upon Spaniard Fernando Torres is supported by rather startling statistics. Over the course of the last two seasons, Torres managed just 40 Premier League starts, scoring 32 times in the process. Unfortunately, the strike-rates of the hardworking Dirk Kuyt and inexperienced David Ngog are nowhere near as prolific as that of Torres, and they highlight Liverpool’s attacking impotence in the absence of the former Atletico Madrid man. A proven striker, one who can comfortably operate in the absence of Torres and in tandem with the Spaniard, must be procured this summer.
The departures of Brazilian Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena over the last six months would certainly indicate that addressing the left-back berth is a matter of importance for Hodgson. Although young Argentine Emiliano Insua made 41 starts last season, his inexperience and lack of maturity would denote that the club need a more seasoned campaigner to keep Insua on his toes next season.
Ultimately, whoever departs Anfield this summer will determine who comes in. Roy Hodgson has a mammoth task on his hands trying to persuade Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano to stay, and retaining the world-class trio is key to Liverpool’s hopes of reclaiming their top-four berth.
Who would you (realistically) like to see arrive at Anfield this summer?
