Liverpool throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark has praised Jurgen Klopp for his innovative thinking and his leadership qualities which have helped the club to progress.
What did he say?
Gronnemark arrived at Anfield a year ago but it hasn’t taken long for the German to make an impression on him, and he has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
The Dane’s appointment was greeted with bewilderment and some mocking, but the Reds have barely put a foot wrong since on their way to achieving 97 points and Champions League glory.
Klopp’s decision to bring him in was a new step in football and is evidence of his assertion that he is an innovator.
Speaking to The Athletic, Gronnemark said: “He’s a leader who says he doesn’t know everything and is willing to listen to people if they have knowledge to take the club forward.
“Even though you’re one of the best clubs in the world, it doesn’t mean you have to do the same thing as you did yesterday. When you meet Jurgen you feel like you are talking with a good friend. He listens a lot.”
Given his achievements in the game Klopp could be forgiven for having an egocentric view, but instead he is always open to new suggestions and aims to learn more, and that is what has enabled his team to improve year on year since he arrived on Merseyside in 2015.
A different side to Klopp
The German made headlines at Borussia Dortmund and at Liverpool for his eccentric celebrations, his quirky press conferences and perhaps above all his strong relationship with the fans.
Gronnemark’s comments show how Klopp puts trusts in those he surrounds himself with, and such delegation of responsibility should allow him to sustain a career at the highest level over a lengthy period of time, allowing his ideas to develop and improve where others have stagnated.

That kind of thinking will also enable him to build a good relationship with his players. They will be thankful of the opportunity to air their thoughts and his appreciation of them and their ideas will make them feel more valued.
His methods have produced success in Germany and in England, and if he continues he could become one of Liverpool’s most successful managers, and that would be some achievement.
