Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham Hotspur’s reported move to hand Japhet Tanganga a new contract, per Football Insider.
What’s he said?
The London Evening Standard reported over the weekend that Spurs had initiated talks with the young defender over a new deal.
His current contract is set to expire in 2021 and carries a weekly wage of £1,500-per-week but there is said to be a desire to increase that to £15,000-per-week.
The Standard reports that Spurs hope to announce the deal within the next few weeks.
And Whelan has backed the move, saying: “If the club are looking to give you that, you’re getting your reward from the club for performances.
“If the club didn’t think he was worth that a week then they wouldn’t even be thinking about offering that huge pay rise he’ll be getting.
“For players as well, you’ve got to cover your back. That’s probably about average these days, quite honestly, even if it is ridiculous money.
“But it’s something that he deserves and the club wouldn’t reward the player if they didn’t think that he was worth it.
“They’re looking after their asset.”

The future
Tanganga is the future of Spurs’ defence.
With his current contract expiring next year, there has to be an effort to keep him in north London and ensure that there is absolutely no risk of him leaving.
While a move to £15,000-per-week is perhaps not an eye-popping salary in the current market, it is an incredible increase.
And, not only that, but it is also much deserved.
Per WhoScored, he has averaged a rating of 7.44 and is already a brilliant, assured defender at the highest level.
Whelan has nailed it; Spurs simply cannot allow him to slip through their fingers.
Meanwhile, Spurs have a star in their midst!
